How to Get to Groningen Groningen is located approximately 146 kilometers (90 miles) from Amsterdam. For international attendees, we have found it is best to fly into Amsterdam and take the 2 - 2.5 hour train to Groningen. By Air: Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport For a list of current airlines servicing Schiphol's Airport, please visit this link. By Train: Groningen has three train stations, but the Main Station (often signed 'Groningen CS' on buses and local trains) is the best option when arriving or departing Groningen. There are direct trains to Groningen from Schiphol Airport, Utrecht and Rotterdam (approximately 2 - 2.5 hours). Groningen can be reached via Amsterdam Centraal with one change. You may plan your journey on the train via NS' website at http://www.ns.nl. Price: 1st Class ticket from Schiphol to Groningen (one-way) is €47.10, a 2nd Class train ticket is €27.70. Please keep in mind that you are not able to purchase tickets on the train and tickets purchased from a self-service ticket machine are €0.50 cheaper than those purchased from the counter. Schiphol Airport to Groningen via Train Arrival to Groningen The Schiphol Airport station is located directly beneath the airport and tickets may be purchased at the NS service desk in the airport. Direct trains from Schiphol to Groningen leave 19 minutes past the hour. On weekdays, the first train from Schiphol to Groningen leaves at 05:49 and the last train leaves at 23:19. On Saturdays, the first train from Schiphol to Groningen leaves at 06:00 and the last train leaves at 23:19. On Sundays, the first train from Schiphol to Groningen leaves at 07:14 and the last train leaves at 22:19. An alternative train leaving Schiphol Airport via Amersfoort departs 49 minutes past the hour. A change of train is needed in Amersfoort to continue on to Groningen. Please be aware that only smart cards/integrated circuit cards (those credit cards with chips embedded in them) are accepted. If you do not have this type of credit card, you will need to PAY IN CASH. Departing Groningen The direct train from Groningen to Schiphol Airport departs Groningen 6 minutes past the hour. The train to Schiphol Airport via Amersfoort departs Groningen 46 minutes past the hour. The train station in Groningen for your trip back does not accept credit cards at all. YOU WILL NEED TO PAY IN CASH. International Destinations to Groningen via Train Two trains per hour to other major Dutch and European cities connect Groningen. Connection from Brussels and Paris is via the Thalys high-speed train and Dutch trains, and from Germany via the Inter City Express (ICE) high-speed train.
