The capability to stop the flow in microfluidic device is among the most challenging capability to enhance microfluidic applications such as diffusion studies, capillary free zone electrophoresis, electro-osmotic flow measurement & control, cell/particle screening, optical/ magnetic /electrical tweezers manipulation, synthetic/natural swimmers studies, electrochemical quantification, liquid AFM/STM studies. In this presentation, we will review and compare the different technical approaches (Syringe pumps, pressure, flow and valve controls) to stop the flow in microfluidic device. The detailed performances that can be reached as a function of microfluidic control systems will be presented in term of time response, residual flow, ease of use...). Finally, the application of the zero flow technology will be illustrated through chosen scientific applications. The measurement of the permselectivity of nanofluidic channels diffusion studies and the control of electro-osmotic flow in polarizable microfluidic transistors will be detailed to illustrate the potentialities of this new class of microfluidic controllers.
