We present a new algorithm which enables the flow-rate control of a microfluidic system using pressure actuators. The algorithm combines the benefits of pressure flow actuation in terms of stability and responsiveness with the direct flow-rate control of the system. The algorithm can address a full range of multi-channel configurations including strong channel coupling. The matrix approach is by far much more powerful than a PID loop and involves an identification step during which all the interdependencies between applied pressures and measured flow-rates are identified and the hydrodynamic modeling computed. The algorithm can be applied to complex systems with cross-talks between channels or a massively parallel system with independent channels, regardless of the number of channels. We tested the performances of this new flow-rate control solution and compared them to the performances of a high precision syringe pump-based solution. The results show higher stability, higher responsiveness and lower cross-talks between channels. Several applications using this new flow control solution will also be presented.
