Time critical situations require rapid testing at the point of need. Relevant situations comprise environmental disasters, bio-terrorism attacks, bioprocess control, or infectious disease testing in intensive care units. In these cases, portable, lab-on-a-chip systems can decrease the turnaround time and allow rapid decision making. The HSG-IMIT Lab-on-a-Chip Design-& Foundry service offers the microfluidic automation and miniaturization of laboratory procedures. It provides the full development chain to design, simulate, prototype and test Lab-on-a-Chip systems. Sufficient numbers of chips for extended system validation can be provided, as well as biological safety laboratories for tests with pathogenic organisms. The design-, prototyping-, and production approach relies on a platform based concept. This enables rapid design iterations and demonstration of feasibility in a short period of time. Based on the centrifugal microfluidic platform various assays have been successfully implemented into fully automated lab-on-a-chip systems, ranging from the sample-to-answer analysis of bacterial pathogens, to a CRP Immunoassay for testing of neonatal sepsis.
