Workshop 10 (Afternoon 2:00 - 5:00) Title: INFLAMMATION RESEARCH ENABLED BY MICROFLUIDICS Presenter: Daniel Irimia, Harvard Medical School, USA Workshop Description: This workshop will cover some of the most recent advances in the field of microfluidics for studies of leukocyte biology and inflammation. Outline: Microfluidic techniques, which have revolutionized the electronics industry and made possible the gene-chips for whole-genome studies, are now poised to transform the field of leukocyte biology. A new generation of assays for ex vivo studies of human and animal leukocytes is emerging. Fueled by recent advances in the understanding of cellular behavior in microenvironments, the new devices are becoming key technologies for applications that range from basic research questions regarding leukocyte physiology to tools to point-of-care devices that rely on leukocytes for diagnostic and monitoring of inflammation. This workshop will provide a primer towards understanding the fundamental processes in inflammation. It will also provide a forum for stimulating discussions regarding the role of new technologies in advancing our understanding of the role of leukocytes in health and disease. |
