Workshop 2: SENSOR INTEGRATION IN MICROFLUIDICS

Live Question & Answer: Sunday, October 4, 08:00 - 09:00

The coupling of sensors with microfluidics offers unprecedented opportunities for diagnostics and life science applications. In this workshop, after reviewing the basic principles of mass transport and reaction kinetics, we will focus on molecular and cell sensing using surface-based assays and impedance cytometry. We will present the most common approaches for molecular detection, with an in-depth focus on surface plasmon resonance (SPR); we will also discuss techniques for signal and specificity improvement, providing examples such as the use of functional aptamers for TB and SARS-COV-2 detection, and the use of electrokinetic focusing, e.g. ITP, ICP, for enhancing the reaction kinetics. Then, we will introduce microfluidic impedance cytometry and its use for characterizing biological cells, e.g. their morphological, electrical or mechanical properties, and we will discuss its integration with real-time processing approaches based on machine learning.

Workshop 3: OPEN SPACE MICROFLUIDIC

Live Question & Answer: Sunday, October 4, 09:00 - 10:00

Open microfluidics is an emerging branch of microfluidics, which challenges the position of the closed channel as the basic unit of microfluidic systems. Rather, open microfluidicists seek to control flow against an open surface such as those typically found in biological or pharmaceutical research, the Petri dish, the well plate, or the glass slide, or even against an air/water interface. In this workshop you will learn about the basic concepts of open-space microfluidics, the basic hydrodynamics and mass transport laws underpinning their design, the democratic fabrication techniques they employ (including free 3D printing CAD files for you to test), and the range of applications that they cover.

The participants will learn the fundamental knowledge and tools for performing 2D PIV and 2D/3D PTV analyses on their own microfluidic systems. Here, free tools such as PIVLab and DefocusTracker will be used to help the participants to gain hand-on experiences. For modeling, the participants will be introduced to the fundamental aspects of theoretical microfluidics as well as to popular commercial or free software packages, which will be introduced with practical examples.
